David Gardner's Textbook of Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART) has over the years emerged as a classic comprehensive reference book for both clinicians as well as embryologists. It aims to provide a holistic overview of reproductive technology.
The 4th edition of the book is a welcome change with several improvements over its predecessor. The current edition comes more conveniently as a set of two separate volumes, one for laboratory aspects and the other for clinical applications. The author's methodical approach and well-written chapters with practical tips make it a complete guide for the entire team at an in vitro fertilization (IVF) clinic.
The first volume of this edition includes several important new contributions on laboratory aspects such as PICSI, IMSI, time lapse technology, embryo kinetics, etc.
The book adequately covers advanced sperm selection methods like IMSI and PICSI that have emerged as potentially important tool for the ART practitioners to improve clinical outcomes such as clinical pregnancy rates and live birth rates. It also has a well-written chapter on time lapse technology and the study of embryo kinetics that represents a new and exciting, powerful tool for viewing cellular activity and understanding embryogenesis. Advanced techniques, including preimplantation genetic diagnosis, vitrification, and stem-cell technology, are comprehensively covered, providing up-to-date analyses of these ground breaking technologies.
The second volume focuses on clinical applications, including preservation of fertility for cancer patients that are now a central topic to professionals and patients. Different strategies for fertility preservation for both men and women are discussed at length in this chapter.
The topic on religious perspectives in human reproduction has been added, which puts a lot of focus on "Cross Border Reproductive Care."
In addition, it also includes new chapters on lifestyle factors, tailored ovarian stimulation and frozen-thawed embryo transfer.
As before, methods, protocols, and techniques of choice are presented by eminent international experts. Excellent authors from all over the globe have come together with their insights, which give the reader a worldwide perspective of reproductive medicine.
The jump in the price of this edition when compared to its previous edition has been steep indeed and may prove a deterrent for the students and beginners in the field of fertility, who would also have benefitted largely by this book.
Male infertility and its diagnosis and management are subjects that have been only briefly touched upon in chapters such as "Sperm recovery techniques" and "Initial investigation of the infertile couple." The subject could have been discussed in greater details. Fertility enhancing endoscopic surgeries and its scope for enhancement of ART successes are another area that has been only briefly covered in separate chapters.
On the whole, this is an excellent textbook presented in a lucid and simple language, and can serve as a fine reference guide for every IVF professional. It is a unique, practical manual that is very helpful for day-to-day use in clinic and laboratory and is an invaluable reference and addition to the literature. Although the book is mostly geared toward educating people working in the IVF laboratory it also is a must read for trainees in reproductive endocrinology, reproductive endocrinologists in practice, and urologists practicing male fertility.
